I didn’t listen to this effort as Manley’s Islamic suckup to Dr. B already caused plenty of yawning as it is. I would have thought actual facts about coronovirus would have been more interesting than suburban romance novels, particularly stuff from Canadian authors.

The internet in general, and my radio show in particular, are swamped with “actual facts about coronavirus.” I had not encountered any fiction on the topic.

One thing I learned from earning four advanced degrees in literature, as well as from common sense and observation, is that storytellers rule the world. Most of your understanding of yourself and the world around you is created by storytelling.

Since a novel is storytelling that knows it’s storytelling, as opposed to the covert storytelling that passes for nonfiction, you can often gain more real understanding and awareness from a good novel than from nonfiction. And this novel is pretty darned good. I don’t fully share the author’s understanding of the facts about COVID, but his book engaged my intellect and imagination far more than most nonfiction I’ve read.

    Suburban? Moosehead’s a two-streetlight town!

Many people find stories more interesting than facts (a fact that is readily apparent in our dumbed-down society today). If you’re wired for facts, while my books has plenty, it’s not the main thread, and probably not for you. But there are plenty of other coronavirus books that’ll meet your needs.

As far as claiming I was sucking up, you’ll have to give specific examples, because I can’t remember anything like that.

  4. Note to Ron Unz and professional epidemiologists and statistics.

Has anybody done an analysis, research on what would have happened if there had been NO, NONE response to Covid? Ignore it completely, but of course sequester the elderly and comorbid population?

This what be a blockbuster of a book. It would be a career buster for thousands of charlatans, sell outs, and psychopaths.

    Mortality rate?
Herd immunity going forward to mutations and variants?

I do not know of any such “control” group studies? This virus had and overall death rate of about 0,05%!!!

  5. @John C. A. Manley

John, some of the idiots who infest the Unz comments section apparently suffered brain damage from the images they were assaulted with on 9/11 and can’t handle sympathetic and/or well-informed discussions of Islam.

Obviously under fire here from geniuses, I would argue on my behalf that ‘narrative’ ie drivel pushed out for political purposes by mass media and others (eg the Unz Covid Biowarfare Narrative), and ‘storytelling’ as per the fictional novel, while related, are two different quantities. Dr B. has cleared up at least one issue by confirming that he is not interested in providing facts on his conspiracy hour, rather than narrative or storytelling, whichever he prefers to call it, which is what I have always suspected. I profoundly apologize to both parties for my unconscionable rudeness.

Hate to break it to you Dimples, but 叙述 is just a fancy word for storytelling. Narratives can be true, false, or in-between. My show is mainly interested in highlighting falsehoods in official narratives and truths in unofficial ones, while generally sorting out truths from falsehoods in both. John Manley’s novel engages with unofficial COVID narratives, contests official ones, and in many cases grounds itself in facts. Like so many novels (Dostoevsky’s Devils https://www.unz.com/kbarrett/attack-of-the-nihilists/ , Dickens, Sinclair’s The Jungle, etc.) it illuminates topical issues. Many of my listeners would like it.
