  1. bob sykes 说:

The basic issue here is Middle Eastern oil, the principal energy source for the West. Four times the West sent large armies into the Middle East to maintain control of that oil: WW I, WW II, Persian Gulf I, Persian Gulf II. We are going to have to do it again or our economies will die.

The Middle East is relatively peaceful only when its people are ground down by some Power. The Ottoman Empire was successful for 400 years, and the Baath parties of Syria and Iraq were able to do so for a couple of generations, until we intervened to weaken and destroy them. So, a war against ISIS will be a failure unless the West can reimpose colonial rule on the region. Since ISIS and Iran are deadly enemies, maybe Iran can be our proxy. You might have to give over Israel. The Godfather did it all the time.

In this regard, ISIS is the only existential threat to the West. Russia and China are merely reasserting historical realities and are not worth our time.

  3. One serious omission is, Obama has no balls. He could have fired a lot of people until some things began to go the direction his tired out and disillusioned base had envisioned from the beginning, but instead he became just another cowardly killer for the empire’s joystick warriors launching hellfire missiles from 10,000 miles away. Blame rogue neo-cons all you like but in fact Obama’s surrounded himself with neo-liberals just as bloodthirsty as anyone, Susan Rice & Sam Power being right up there (not to mention his ‘kill list Tuesdays’ with DCI Brennan, so not exactly sabotaged by neo-cons in every case, at least not when he’s embracing them.)

Say what you like about Obama’s cajones but, seriously, who would want his job? There are major crisis’ unfolding in almost every facet of the body politic, and they are not necessarily all his fault.
The last Presidents who seriously attempted to impose a strong personal vision into policy – particularly foreign policy – were effectively fired (JFK and Nixon).

Washington is a viper pit of factions and power centers. The “unitary executive” concepts of the Bush Jr years were not about making presidential directives a central driver of policy, they were about removing policy from Congessional oversight and therefore outside of democratic control. Obama, imho, got into office and realized he actually had no control other than a final yes/no over policies created by others (i.e. his “no” on the plans to bomb Syria last year).

  5. Let’s make hard times bad times!
    1. let’s ignore the warnings of a “perfect storm” and ‘social destruction’ and refuse the food aid requested by UN FAO in 2008. “we question whether limited USG resources should be directed toward this appeal at this time.” (reported on November 26, 2008 in cable 08DAMASCUS847_a to Washington and “leaked” to Wikileaks )
    2. let’s send weapons into a situation which we do not understand

Then once the pot is bubbling and out of control let’s look like good guys!

America’s white hat? Mostly always an illusion/aspiration but now a fully fixed false belief. What are the good results of our mid-east wars? Accountability is a big word but seems to apply only to teachers, nurses, waiters and other small fry …. or perhaps,as I fear more and more, our foreign policy and strategy is to seed chaos abroad, and fear [“all the better to control you,my dears’] at home. If so our money has been well spent!

  6. “The Middle East is relatively peaceful only when its people are ground down by some Power. ”

Spoken like a true anti-democratic imperialist. The truth of the matter is, empire always provokes rebellion, despite promotions of “the peace of the grave” by its ideologues. And the reason we are afraid of “fighting them here” is just as the prescient unbought Ron Paul put it, because some of our oligarchs got our military to fight them there, for their own country’s natural resources, which creates blowback. Perhaps for them, it’s blood and soil, while for our elites it’s our blood and their oil.

And what if the cities of the United States are only peaceful when their citizens are ground down by some Power?

But most of them ,那恭喜你, his fault. He’s weak, and weakness is provocative.
