Syrian Army helicopters dropped leaflets on parts of eastern Aleppo on Sunday warning anti-government fighters to surrender while they still had the chance. Hundreds of jihadists have already laid down their weapons and surrendered while a hardline corps of deadenders continue to fend off the rapidly advancing army.

The situation is looking increasingly hopeless for the ragtag group of insurgents that have lost more than half the territory they held in just the last week. Every attempt they’ve made to break through Syrian Army lines has been repelled leaving them to defend a few shrinking districts where they will either surrender or die.

On Sunday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov delivered an ultimatum to the remaining militants that clarified the position of the Syrian government and its allies. he said:

“Those groups which refuse to leave eastern Aleppo will be treated as terrorists. By refusing to walk out from eastern Aleppo they will in fact go ahead with armed struggle. We will treat them accordingly, as terrorists and extremists, and support the Syrian army in its operation against such armed gangs.”

US Secretary of State John Kerry has made every effort to stop the fighting to protect US-backed jihadists that are trying to topple Syrian President Bashar al Assad. Unfortunately, a proposal that was accepted by both Kerry and Lavrov concerning the withdrawal of fighters in Aleppo, was rejected by higher-ups in the Obama Administration ending the prospects for a negotiated settlement. Lavrov expressed his frustration in comments to the media where he said:

“They have withdrawn their document and have a new one. Our initial impression is that this new document backtracks, and is an attempt to buy time for the militants, allow them to catch their breath and resupply. The same thing happened with our agreement of September 9. It’s difficult to understand who makes decisions there, but apparently there are plenty of those who want to undermine the authority and practical steps by John Kerry.”

According to Reuters, “the Syrian Foreign Ministry said it would now accept no truce in Aleppo, should any outside parties try to negotiate one.” Meanwhile, “Russia and China vetoed a U.N. Security Council resolution on Monday calling for a week-long ceasefire.” Simply put, this is the end of the line for the US-backed terrorists that have laid to waste much of the battered country and killed more than 400,000 people. And while Aleppo may not be the decisive turning point in the ongoing conflict, it does put all of the main population centers and industrial hubs back under regime control.

More important, the recapturing of Aleppo is a major setback for Washington and its jihadist-breeding allies. (US, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Qatar) US plans for redrawing the map of the Middle East to meet its economic and geopolitical objectives has been defeated by a courageous and determined coalition (Syria, Iran, Russia and Hezbollah) that has methodically routed or exterminated the foreign-backed opposition and reestablished both state security and the sovereign authority of the elected government to control its own affairs.

On Tuesday morning, AMN News reported that the Syrian Army had captured 85 percent of East Aleppo. Dozens of insurgents have been killed in sporadic fighting while hundreds more have surrendered. It appears that the battle of Aleppo is about to end and the Syrian Army is on the “verge of total victory.”

The liberation of Aleppo will be a pyrrhic victory for Assad as it lay in ruins, soaked in blood. Where will the money come from to fiance the rebuilding of the city? They say the proxy war on Syria has set the country back decades if it will ever recover completely. Enemies of Syria, presumably Israel, US, Turkey and Arabia could claim a victory of sorts in laying Assad and Syria prostrate.

As for the “rebels”, “insurgents”, “moderate” opposition and Jihadists they were fools, cold blooded murderers, mercenaries, bandits, foreign proxies and traitors to their country.
If they didn’t want to live under the “Assad Regime” why didn’t they just immigrate instead of destroying the country and causing a mass migration of Syrian citizens out of the country.

I doubt there are any “winners”,the winners had to pay for munitions and mercenary salaries depleting their treasuries for no tangible gain; everybody lost including Assad who will rule over a heap of rubble.

  2. Perfect. It is a little odd, however, that the surrendered jihadists are typically put on buses, transferred into Idlib province, the territory controlled by jihadist groups, and let go. Is Syria planning to assert its control over Idlib or not? It seems that it might be a very difficult and bloody fight, unless they manage to make a deal…

“The liberation of Aleppo”? EAST Aleppo–to wit, PART of the city.

    A Grant after Vicksburg gesture?

The Syrian gov’t has a decades-old reputation for bloodiness that maybe they’re trying to shed. Plus the numbers of jihadis don’t seem that high anyway. Still, if you’re right it seems a strange thing to do.

  7. Syria can recover more rapidly if it can gain control over the disputed Golan Heights area where large amounts of oil await recovery. That will be difficult because of Israel and the US consortium of the unholy with paper claims on it. Cheney, Murdoch,Summers, Richardson ad nauseam

Current United States is not a treaty-worthy party. Any settlement on anything with Obama Administration, on any geopolitical and military-political issue, is not worth the paper it is printed on. Lavrov, actually, is merely making appearances in support of larger objectives, the fact that doesn’t preclude him being frustrated, who wouldn’t be when dealing with the collection of hacks and jihad supporters in Obama’s cabinet. Imagine dealing with Vicki Nuland for 20 minutes, who wouldn’t want to puke. Rephrasing famous Clausewitz’ dictum that the war is merely a continuation of policy by other (violent) means we inevitably arrive to the fact that (diplomatic) policy is merely a continuation of war by other (peaceful) means. Obama Administration, which is completely detached from military realities on the ground in Syria (and elsewhere), does not operate on the knowledge but on the irrational impulses. Aleppo is already largely liberated, now is the time for moping up. Real talks will be held with new US President, who seems to be willing, unlike previous 3 Presidents, to keep his end of a bargain. And it will be there where Lavrov will be engaged with the new Secretary of the State in real, productive, based on reality discussions.

In accordance to the Chief of GOU (Main Operational Department of General Staff) Lieutenant- General Rudskoy (he stated it this morning) about 93% of Aleppo is under control of SAA. GOU of Russian General Staff usually doesn’t deal with fiction. Very recent look at the operational map of Aleppo kinda supports Rudskoy’s statement. That is why there is (was) a desperate IS counter-attack at Palmyra. Anything to postpone inevitable.

What you say is all correct, except that the Russians are being very cautious about Trump, who is likely as slippery as Obama and whose long-time prescription has been an attack on Iran, in the service of Israel, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, etc.

One guesses that Señor Trump will try to make a “deal” to the effect that the US will offer the Russians a free hand in Syria in return for US increased pressure toward destabilizing Iran.

Of course this is an illusory bargain since Syria and the Russians are already in the driver’s seat in Syria while the US diddles around in Mosul, against the possibility of sending ISIS in Mosul to Syria.

    俄罗斯人会为之倾倒吗?

One suspects the Trumpster has no idea what he is getting himself into. His sort of real estate is a tame game of speculation for monetary gain.

The Russian conception of real estate in this case also includes the Caspian Sea. You remember the Caspian Sea? From which were fired some of the first cruise missiles, over Iranian territory, into Syria against ISIS.

The Russians have no interest in an Iran spelled U-K-R-A-I-N-A.

Señor Trump and his anti-Iranian clique will be lucky to get out with their mink-lined jockstraps.

You are correct . This tendency to believe that Russia will cozy up to the latest American overtures ( is tehre any anyway? ) or to the newly released album of some novel tune is the wish , is the hope- a reality- that is cherished would usher . It is the expression of despair or worst it is the projection of their fear on Russian as if Russian has forgot the looting of their economy and the raging fires across their western and southern borders and delivered with the same soothing voices of hope and new beginning . Russia is not for a grand bargain here that predicates on the scenario that let Iran be attacked or Syria be dismantled and Russia would gain access to the privileged club of white western nations. Neither anti China stance will influence Russia .

Trump might wear a Russia friendly mask or even sincerely want rapprochement with Russia but why Russia will believe US that has shredded so many treaties and negotiations, verbal assurances and logical understanding as recent yesterday .

Not cynical at all. When there’s a missing ingredient things just don’t seem right.

  13. @Anon

Hmm, I duuno. They have the reputation in the western media, and that is not a function of anything they do. I suppose they might be trying to appease the jihadists, to signal the goodwill and all that.
